Corporate Baking Giant Sara Lee Hijacks Organics

"Cornucopia, Wisconsin: With the growing success of organics, and increasing consumer interest in buying foods that were grown on sustainable farms without toxic chemicals, Sara Lee Corporation has launched, with much fanfare, a marketing campaign for its EarthGrains bread, chock-full of environmental-friendly catchphrases.

Sara Lee claims that “Eco-Grain™,” an ingredient actually used in small proportions in its EarthGrains brand breads, is more sustainable than organic grain. What has been described as a “crass and exploitive marketing ploy” has angered many in the organic community.

“Corporations like Sara Lee clearly want to profit from consumers’ interest in ecological and healthy food production. But unlike organic companies, Sara Lee is doing practically nothing to ensure its ingredients are truly ecologically produced,” said Charlotte Vallaeys, a Food and Farm Policy Analyst at The Cornucopia Institute, a Wisconsin-based organic industry watchdog. “It’s a crass example of a corporation trying to capitalize on the valuable market cachet of organic, while intentionally misleading consumers–without making any meaningful commitment to protect the environment or produce safer and more nutritious food.”"

Recall: President's Choice Organic Chocolate Digestive Biscuits May Contain Undeclared Dairy

"The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning people who are allergic to milk not to consume President's Choice-brand organics chocolate digestive biscuits.

The CFIA and Loblaw Companies Ltd., the importer of the Scottish-made biscuits, said the recalled product might contain milk ingredients that are not declared on the label.

Officials said all packages of biscuits that do not declare the presence of milk ingredients are affected by the recall. The biscuits were distributed nationally."

Conservation Funds Available for Organic Growers

"HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- For a second year, Pennsylvania farmers transitioning to organic agriculture or those who are certified organic have the opportunity to receive assistance for applying conservation practices through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) organic initiative. Applications are being accepted now until March 12, 2010.
USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Pennsylvania has set aside $760,000 to support organic agriculture. Approved applicants may be eligible to receive up to $20,000 per year, totaling up to $80,000 over six years.
The EQIP organic initiative is designed to provide financial assistance in the form of payments of 75 percent of the average cost of a conservation practice, or 90 percent of the average cost of a conservation practice if the producer is in a traditionally underserved group, such as limited resource, beginning, or minority farmers."

New USDA Data Offers In-Depth Look at Organic Farming

"According to results of the 2008 Organic Production Survey released February 3, 2010 by USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa ranks ninth in the U.S. in number of organic farms.

"This was USDA's first wide-scale survey of organic producers, and it was undertaken in direct response to the growing interest in organics among consumers, farmers, businesses, policymakers and others," says USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan. "The information will be an important building block for future program and policy development."

The survey counted 14,540 U.S. farms and ranches that were either USDA certified organic or were exempt from certification because their sales totaled less than $5,000. These operations comprised 4.1 million acres of land, of which 1.6 million acres were harvested cropland and 1.8 million acres were pasture or rangeland. In Iowa, 518 farms were reported, comprising 94,568 total acres."

Heavy Snows Taking Toll on Greenhouses, Crops

"The heavy snows which are blanketing much of the eastern half of the country are taking their toll on greenhouse structures. Growers are reporting damage caused by the weight of the heavy snows, including damage to the glazing and structural supports.

Larry Gude of Gude Brothers Greenhouse in Middletown, Md., walked into his 67,000 sq. ft. greenhouse on Feb. 6, to find shattered glass and bent metal. The Frederick News-Post reported that Gude estimates the structural damage could be as high as $1 million with a plant loss of $750,000. Gude is hoping to salvage a portion of the 400,000 gerbera plants that were growing in the house. Your4State.com reported that Gude and his employees were working to try to save 25% of the crop.
Members of the Univ. of Md. Extension said that they have received several reports form growers in central Maryland and on the Eastern shore that incurred damage from both unheated and heated greenhouses collapsing from the heavy snowfall. One grower lost a third of the greenhouses at his operation. "

Stop Monsanto's GMO Contamination of Organic Foods

"During the Bush administration, Monsanto illegally won USDA approval for its genetically engineer(GE) alfalfa by convincing regulators to bypass a mandatory environmental review. In response to a lawsuit by consumer groups, the courts then stepped in and banned GE alfalfa until the USDA followed the law. In December, the USDA released its belated review of Monsanto's GE alfalfa seed and determined that Monsanto's alfalfa met the Obama Administration's standards, despite the risk of organic contamination.

New Pasture Rules Issued for Organic Dairy Producers

"The Department of Agriculture issued new rules on Friday meant to settle a dispute in the organic agriculture industry over how much time cows at organic dairies must spend grazing on pasture. The ruling was cheered by many in the organic industry who said it would shore up consumer confidence in organic milk and could force some larger dairies in Western states to change how they operate.

The new rules clarify an older requirement that said only that organically raised livestock had to have access to pasture. That left a loophole for some dairies that would put cows out to pasture only during periods when the animals were not giving milk or would feed their animals almost exclusively on grain or other feeds."

LaGrange’s Organic Food Co-op Loses Licensing Fight

"ELYRIA — Lorain County Common Pleas Court Judge James Burge ruled Wednesday the Manna Storehouse, a LaGrange organic food co-op, is a retail store and should be licensed as one.

Jacqueline and John Stowers have claimed their organic food store on SR 303 was not a retail store and therefore was not subject to be inspected or regulated.

They maintained their claim even after the Ohio Department of Agriculture raided the store in December 2008 and seized food, electronic devices and documents because the store was unlicensed.

Burge wrote in his ruling “Manna’s exclusion from licensure as a ‘retail food establishment’ would have no rational basis.”"

Organic Growers Alter Produce Plan

RECALL: Applegate Farms Sausage May Contain Foreign Plastic Material

"WASHINGTON, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall of about 1,485 pounds of Applegate Farms-brand sausage because of possible contamination.

The federal agency said Schmalz European Provisions of Springfield, N.J., initiated the recall of the ready-to-eat sausage products because they might contain foreign plastic material.

Being recalled are 12-ounce packages of "Applegate Farms Certified Organic Fire Roasted Red Pepper Fully Cooked Chicken & Turkey Sausage." Each package has a "use by/freeze by" date of Feb. 28, 2010."

The Natural Products Association, a Washington-based group representing manufacturers and retailers including Clorox Co. and Whole Foods Market, plans to release new standards Thursday for natural home care products. The group is issuing the guidelines out of concern that products like household cleaners and detergents say on labels that they are natural when they are made mostly of synthetic ingredients, says Daniel Fabricant, the association's vice president for scientific and regulatory affairs. Wisconsin Comes in Second as Leader of Organic Farming

"MADISON – Governor Jim Doyle announced today that Wisconsin is second in the nation in the number of organic farms, according to numbers released today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural (USDA) Statistics Service.

“Farming is the heritage and the future of Wisconsin, and we’ve worked hard to strengthen and diversify agriculture across the state,” Governor Doyle said. “Organic farming is one of the areas that Wisconsin is leading the way, and I am proud to support these efforts.”

According to the USDA’s survey, Wisconsin has 1,222 organic farms, the second highest in the nation, behind California. Wisconsin organic farms use 195,603 acres of land. Organic sales in the state total $132.8 million, including $30.1 million in crops sales and $102.6 million in sales of livestock, poultry and their products. Sixty-four percent of total organic sales in Wisconsin were from milk from cows."

Why It May Cost Us More NOT to Eat Organic

Today, Americans spend almost 20 cents of every dollar managing disease - diabetes, allergies, asthma, cancer, obesity - and only 10 cents of every dollar on food. The jury is still out on what exactly may be causing all of these epidemics, but genetics don't change that quickly, the environment does. And increasing evidence points to the role that diet is playing in the onset of disease.

In a perfect world, we'd all be growing our own organic vegetable garden, but most of us don't yet live in that world. With picky eaters, limited time and a limited budget, we are trying to do the best we can with what we've got and are frustrated by the price discrepancy between conventional food and "organic" food at the grocery store."

Taiwan Company Under Fire for Mislabeling Origin of Organic Food

"TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A producer of organic foods was facing fines Monday for misrepresenting the origin of its products as hailing from Ilan County.
Yuen Foong Yu Biotech Co. Ltd, an affiliate of prominent paper manufacturer Yuen Foong Yu Group, said it had started last December to print the location of the packaging procedure on its labels instead of the region of origin. The change was completely legal, Yuen Foong Yu Biotech President Ho Yi-chia told a news conference Monday, blaming the confusion about the labeling on unclear legislation.

Inspectors and consumers groups disagreed with the company’s arguments, saying the true region of origin of each organic product should be clearly and honestly listed on the labels. Media reports alleged some of the company’s organic products came from suppliers that had not yet received official homologation as organic farms."
