"A WAKE-UP call a few years ago prompted a change in direction for a family business going back three generations.
And that change has paid off, with Keilor market gardeners Peter and Steve Skopilianos picking up three gongs at last month’s Organic Expo in Melbourne.
“About three years ago, I remember in spring when we had a very high activity of insects. We were spraying our salads every second day,” Steve Skopilianos said.
“And my wife says to me, ‘Bring some salad home, Steve.’ And I didn’t. I couldn’t bring salad home for my family, my kids to eat. And I just thought that’s it – I’ve had enough of this. We needed a serious change in direction. If I can’t give my own product to my family to eat, how can I expect the others to eat it?”
Keilor Valley Gardens’ new name – Ladybird Organics – is just one of many changes and developments the operation has seen since it began in the mid-1940s."
